The Holy City of Makkah

Makkah (also spelled Mecca) is the holiest city in Islam, home to Masjid al-Haram and the Kaaba. For Muslims, facing toward the Kaaba during daily prayers connects them to this sacred site from anywhere in the world.

Masjid al-Haram

The Grand Mosque can accommodate over two million worshippers during peak periods. The mosque complex surrounds the Kaaba and includes the Zamzam well, Maqam Ibrahim, and the hills of Safa and Marwa where Sa’i is performed.

Prayer Times and Crowds

The mosque is open 24 hours. The busiest times are around the five daily prayers, especially Fajr, Maghrib, and Isha. If you prefer less crowded conditions, visit during mid-morning or early afternoon.

Practical Tips

Carry a small prayer rug and water. The marble floors can be hot during daytime — wear shoes you can easily remove. The expansion has created air-conditioned areas throughout the mosque. Zamzam water is freely available inside the mosque.

Ziyarat Sites in Makkah

Popular sites include Jabal al-Noor (the cave of Hira where the first revelation was received), Jabal Thawr, Mina, Arafat, and Muzdalifah. Most guided Ziyarat tours cover these sites in a half-day trip.
